Phase behavior of hard colloidal platelets using free energy calculations.

We investigate the phase behavior of a model for colloidal hard platelets and rigid discotic molecules: oblate hard spherocylinders (OHSC). We perform free energy calculations using Monte Carlo simulations to map out the phase diagram as a function of the aspect ratio L∕D of the particles. The phase diagram displays a stable isotropic phase, a nematic liquid crystal phase for L∕D≤0.12, a column...

A New Mixing Rule for Mixtures of Hard Spheres

A mixing rule for the mixtures of hard-spheres is presented which can be reduced to the standard van der Waals mixing rule at low densities. The effectiveness of the mixing rule for the size and energy parameters of lennard-Jones fluid are examined by combining them with an equation of state to calculate thermodynamic properties. The results of calculation are compared with the molecular dy...

Assembly of hard spheres in a cylinder: a computational and experimental study.

Hard spheres are an important benchmark of our understanding of natural and synthetic systems. In this work, colloidal experiments and Monte Carlo simulations examine the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium assembly of hard spheres of diameter σ within cylinders of diameter σ≤D≤ 2.82σ. Although phase transitions formally do not exist in such systems, marked structural crossovers can nonetheless ...

Circle Actions on Homotopy Spheres Not Bounding Spin Manifolds

Smooth circle actions are constructed on odd-dimensional homotopy spheres that do not bound spin manifolds. Examples are given in every dimension for which exotic spheres of the described type exist. A result of H. B. Lawson and S.-T. Yau [15] implies that homotopy spheres not bounding spin manifolds do not admit effective smooth S3 or S03 actions. On the other hand, G. Bredon has shown that ev...

Two-stage melting induced by dislocations and grain boundaries in monolayers of hard spheres.

Melting in two-dimensional systems has remained controversial as theory, simulations, and experiments show contrasting results. One issue that obscures this discussion is whether or not theoretical predictions on strictly 2D systems describe those on quasi-2D experimental systems, where out-of-plane fluctuations may alter the melting mechanism. Using event-driven molecular dynamics simulations,...
